Holding the Bass

This is an important lesson for the begining bass guitar student who wishes to to avoid an awkward playing style which tends to impede progress.

The following valuable advice will help provide an important foundation for the beginner to achieve maximum technical skills later on :

1) Adjust your supporting strap in order to achieve a comfortable angle, reach and balance.

2) Try to maintain a comfortable and relaxed right hand position with the thumb ahead of the fingers.

3) Make sure that your left hand is comfortable and relaxed, in a correct position with the thumb approximately opposite the middle of the first and second fingers.

4) Try to keep the left hand in an appropriate position so that the tips of the fingers press against the strings. It is important that you press the string rather than squeeze the neck ! This will also allow you to take full advantage of important techniques such as slurs (the hammer-on and the pull-off).
